The perfectionism part of adhd is my one worst enemies. That always leads up to imposter syndrome. Self based negatives. "I'll cut off my own nose before anyone else can " I think perfection or the self awareness of this is due to knowing what you are capable of.💯 but procrastination shows up, imposter syndrome.. Or as I put it the other two of you. Critical arguments with yourselves or your thoughts however you'd care to explain it. Adhd is a blessing and a curse. The self help positive strategies help 5% of the time. However... when all of the above is activity convincing you otherwise is a battle of that 95% and it's not always as easy as it's explained. I think accepting we WILL almost certainly have these days no matter what and the fighting it makes it almost impossible to waver. Self acceptance is the most important part. Rome wasn't built in a day.

I thought Bill Gates, Albert Einstein, ChanningTatum, Michael Jordan, Terry Bradshaw, Emma Watson, Dr. Hallowell and Walt Disney have/had ADHD? Isn't ADHD more about being neurochemically different rather than disabled? Listening to this in 2024, and there are just so many things that stand out to me as odd when talking about disability i.e. diversity support. Firstly, why are we still talking about women as females in psychology in 2022? It's extremely rare that someone's actual genetic makeup is going to have relevance in a psychological assessment. If that's the case, we would take blood samples to analyze people's DNA for autism genes when performing autism assessments, but we know it's not that simple so we don't do it. Therefore we also don't know if a person has an intersex condition or is trans when they speak to a mental health professional unless they outright tell you that they are. If a person presents as feminine regardless of their body phenotype, and goes by a female name and female pronouns, then it's a woman, period, and it's easier to address them as such. Especially given the prevalence of LGBTQ+ overlap within the neurodivergent community. Psychology really needs to drop the idea of labeling people as males and females, because not only is it objectifying and dehumanizing, but it also isn't relevant in a majority of cases, ESPECIALLY since gender roles have a great impact on how people are like and this is not recognized when we talk about males and females. And again, you're also going to lose the LBGTQ+ and intersex population who cannot necessarily be categorized according to a simplified male and female scheme. Secondly, the mentioning of SPARK, this is an organization I have questioned in the past and will question again. There is SO MUCH focus on trying to understand autism at a genetic level in order to provide "cures" or "medicines" for autism, when that money could be spent on actual advocacy and to provide a better social environment which accommodates autistics. I am not saying that medicinal support is wrong, but given how broad the spectrum is, it is obvious that placing all research emphasis on this particular aspect cannot be rooted in anything but ableist assumptions, most notably related to capitalist society and how capitalist society will always politicize people's bodies where people who cannot work will always be deemed "lesser" compared to those who can. This also ties into the idea of workplace accommodations instead of other non-capitalist solutions like improved welfare and social rights structures that protects autistics, makes it easier and more affordable to be diagnosed etc. Imagine if instead of spending money on finding cures, this SPARK organization would spend money on lobbying to improve the welfare structure so parents with high support needs autistic children could get sufficient help with raising their child. Then they wouldn't feel nearly as driven to find a cure to autism, because their child gets the accommodations it needs to live a satisfying life in accordance to their abilities. Thirdly, autism is consistently framed as a children's disorder, because at no point does he talk about diagnosing adults above the age of 21.

Omg, my spouse has ADHD and sometimes I just want to call it quits. He can be verbally loud and screams, his emotional regulation is non existent, and it's exhausting. But he doesn't want to see anyone about this. If he loses something, it's my fault. He swears I touch his things, his piles of crap. He can't handle work issues, he's always angry when he comes home. He is on medication but he is out of control lately. To the point I feel like I'm walking on eggshells. The pit of my stomach always is churning after he is in a bad mood and my migraines are triggered partially by stress and hormones, and man, he stresses me out!

I wanted to say something about the having “too high expectations” for ourselves. Part of the reason I am so hard on myself is because I feel like I’m constantly being critiqued so I try so hard to be perfect even if deep down I know it’s impossible to be perfect. Most of the things I’ve accomplished in my life have only been done because of the fear of being criticized if I didn’t do it. That’s how bad it is. my main motivation for doing things is knowing if I don’t do it I’ll get grief from another person. The need to please people so you don’t upset them has always been a huge thing as well.

Fascinating, important insight at 34:09. Can people with OCD, anxiety, and ADHD become distracted by their obsessive thoughts and anxiety because the mind, in its own complex way, finds more energy and dopamine from the OCD and anxiety than the college lecture. In other words, perhaps OCD and anxiety don't just represents serotonin dysregulation/deficits, but dopamine deficits where the mind goes to the obsessions and even anxiety as a source of dopamine. This could explain why some of us are drawn to our fears and obsessions in some way and can't focus on other things. I think there's something to be said for this possibility. Again, fantastic video.

Fascinating video. Thank you, Dr. Olivardia. I have a history of OCD, anxiety, early PTSD, and depression. "Pure O" is the best way to describe my OCD. I could see ADHD elements in my situation--hyperactivity and inattention. the question that i have to sort out is whether adding an ADHD medication to my SSRI make the anxiety and OCD worse, or actually calm and focus me, which would be very appreciated and welcome. I wonder what the safest ADHD medication to add to an anxious--OCD patient might be. My doctor suggested Concerta. Again, thank you for this interesting and important video that looks at seemingly contradictory conditions.

this gets tricky when 2 people with disorders are married to each other and have 1 out of 2 kids with it. imagine a person with adhd/rsd trying to believe she can support herself enough to get out of an emotionally abusive marriage to someone with narcissistic pd and ptsd and social anxiety. when he curses and attacks her with the cruelest cutting comments he can come up with for 3 hours straight she may think rsd is making me overreact, stopping me from bouncing back and getting over it so she stays with him but this is where a therapist can provide an objective perspective and let u know even though the pain may be intense to break up its best to try to get out or have a separation
